Best Hostels in Rotorua, New Zealand
Rotorua gets two nights in my own itinerary, right after Auckland. It’s also where the trip’s first real geothermal activity happens, plus the most common base for a Hobbiton day trip.

Why Rotorua Is Different From Other Hostel Stops

YHA Rotorua
YHA runs a global network of hostels with fairly consistent standards, and the Rotorua location is no exception. It tends to run quieter than some of the more social hostels in town.
It’s a solid choice if you want the hostel format without the party-hostel reputation, similar to YHA’s Queenstown property.
Astray Backpackers
Astray is a popular, long-running hostel in Rotorua known for its garden common areas and relaxed atmosphere. It’s a good middle ground between the bigger party hostels and quieter options.
It’s centrally located and easy to reach on foot from most of the town’s geothermal attractions.
Rotorua Thermal Holiday Park
This is more of a holiday park than a traditional hostel, with cabins, motel units, and campervan sites alongside standard rooms.
It’s worth considering if you’re already leaning toward a campervan for this leg. It’s also a good fit if you want more space and privacy than a typical dorm-style hostel offers.
Choosing the Right Area to Stay In
Most Rotorua hostels sit within a short walk of the lakefront and the main downtown strip. Location differences are smaller here than in bigger cities.
Staying central makes it easier to walk to geothermal parks and tour pickups, without needing a car for every trip around town.
Booking Tips Specific to Rotorua
Book your Hobbiton tour a few days ahead once you know your dates. Popular time slots can sell out during peak season.
Many geothermal park visits and cultural experiences are easiest to book through your hostel’s front desk. Front desks often have relationships with local operators.
When to Visit
Rotorua’s geothermal parks are worth visiting year-round. Most attractions are indoor or short outdoor walks, rather than long hikes.
Summer (December through February) brings the biggest crowds and highest hostel rates. Shoulder months offer a better balance of good weather and lighter crowds.
Hostels vs. Other Options
Rotorua has a wide range of motels and small hotels alongside its hostels. That’s more than some of the smaller stops on this itinerary.

Day Trips Worth Basing Around
Hobbiton gets most of the attention, but it’s not the only reason to stay two nights here. Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is a short drive out of town and worth a half-day on its own.
Waitomo Glowworm Caves are further out, closer to two hours each way, so they work better as a stop on the drive south than a Rotorua day trip. Ask your hostel which tours combine well, since operators often bundle these differently.
