WHY BOOK EXCURSIONS

It’s easy to book your Flights and Hotel and then decide you’ll figure out everything else when you arrive.

Sometimes that works.

But if there’s an activity you really want to do, I wouldn’t leave it entirely to chance.

Popular tours can sell out, especially during holidays, spring break, summer vacations, cruise-port days, and other busy travel periods.

Booking ahead also gives you time to compare operators instead of choosing whatever happens to have availability after you arrive.

That doesn’t mean you need to schedule every hour of your vacation. I like having a few things planned and leaving some open time too.

One or two great excursions can give your trip some structure without making your vacation feel like a schedule you have to follow.

Private Tours vs. Group Tours

One of the first decisions you’ll sometimes have to make is whether to book a private or group excursion.

Group tours are usually less expensive and can be a great option when you want to see the major sights without spending a lot. Private tours generally cost more, but you may get a more personalized experience, additional flexibility, and fewer people.

For families or groups traveling together, always compare the total price rather than just the advertised per-person price. A private tour divided among six people may be more reasonable than it initially looks.

What’s Included in the Price?

Always read the details before booking. Some excursions include transportation, equipment, admission fees, snacks, drinks, or meals. Others charge separately for some or all of those things.

You may also need money for gratuities, parking, photographs, lockers, equipment upgrades, or optional activities.

If transportation isn’t included, find out where the tour starts and how long it will take to get there from your hotel or vacation rental. A $10 cheaper excursion isn’t saving you money if getting to the meeting point costs another $40.

Choosing a Tour Operator

Price matters, but I wouldn’t choose an excursion based on price alone. Look at recent reviews and pay attention to what travelers repeatedly mention.

Was the tour organized? Did it start on time? Was the guide knowledgeable? Was the equipment in good condition? Did travelers feel like they received what was advertised?

Also read the negative reviews. One unhappy traveler doesn’t necessarily mean you should avoid a company, but the same complaint appearing over and over is something I would pay attention to.

Before booking, I also check a platform like TripAdvisor to see how a company is reviewed outside of its own site, since that gives a more complete picture than reviews alone.

Best Excursions in Marco Island & Florida

Southwest Florida is one of my favorite areas for getting out on the water.

If you’re visiting Marco Island, boat tours are one of the most popular ways to explore the surrounding area. Depending on the tour, you may see dolphins, wildlife, mangrove islands, beaches, and parts of the Ten Thousand Islands that you wouldn’t experience from the road.

Sunset cruises are another popular choice if you want something relaxing rather than an all-day adventure.

Visit our Marco Island guide for more ideas on where to stay, what to do, and how to plan your trip.

If you’re staying farther north, Naples, Florida also has plenty of options for boat trips, sightseeing, wildlife experiences, food tours, and other activities.

You don’t necessarily have to stay in one place either. Marco Island and Naples are close enough that you can look at excursion options in both areas and choose the experience that interests you most.

HOW TO SAVE MONEY

Book early

If there's one excursion you absolutely don't want to miss, book it ahead of time. Waiting until you arrive may leave you with fewer choices or only the more expensive times and options.

Travel off-peak

Prices and availability can vary by season. If your travel dates are flexible, visiting outside the busiest weeks may mean smaller crowds and potentially better prices on hotels, activities, and other parts of your trip.

Compare options

Don't assume two tours with similar names are the same. Compare the length, group size, transportation, equipment, meals, cancellation policy, and what's included. The lowest price isn't always the best value.

Bundle activities

Some destinations and booking platforms offer attraction passes or activity bundles. These can save money if you were already planning to do most of the included activities. Don't buy a bundle just because the advertised savings look impressive.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best excursions to book?

The best excursion depends on your destination and the way you like to travel. Boat and wildlife tours can be great in coastal destinations. City and food tours are useful when you want to learn about a new place. Outdoor adventures are a good choice if you want a more active vacation. I would choose one or two experiences that are particularly special to the destination rather than filling every day with activities you could do anywhere.

Should I book excursions in advance?

If an excursion is important to your trip, yes. Popular activities and smaller tours can sell out during busy periods. Booking ahead also gives you more time to compare reviews, prices, times, and cancellation policies. You don't need to book every activity before leaving home, so leave some room for spontaneous plans too.

Are excursions refundable?

It depends on the tour operator and the type of ticket you purchase. Some activities offer free cancellation until a specific time before the tour. Others may be partially refundable or nonrefundable. Weather-related cancellation policies can also vary. Always check the cancellation terms before you pay.

How do I find the best deals?

Compare options, read reviews, and book early.

Do I need to book excursions through my hotel?

No. Hotel concierges can be convenient, but they're not your only option. Compare the hotel's recommendation with online booking platforms and the tour operator directly. Look at the total price, cancellation policy, reviews, transportation, and what's included before deciding where to book.

What should I bring on an excursion?

It depends on the activity. For outdoor and water activities, you may need sunscreen, comfortable shoes, a hat, swimsuit, towel, water, identification, or a change of clothes. Check the tour details before you leave your hotel, since some operators provide equipment and supplies while others expect you to bring your own.

Is travel insurance worth considering for excursions?

It can be, particularly when you're paying in advance for an expensive trip or several nonrefundable activities. Travel insurance policies vary considerably, so don't assume every cancellation or missed excursion will be covered. Check what the policy covers, exclusions, and any requirements before purchasing it.

Compare tours, activities, and experiences to find the best options for your trip.

Choose the experiences that will make your destination special, whether that's seeing dolphins near Marco Island, a food tour in a new city, or snorkeling with your family. Then leave yourself a little time to do absolutely nothing. Sometimes that's one of the best parts of a vacation.
